Thanksgiving Tradition- Shoofly Pie

Thanksgiving is about family, friends, food and traditions. Many families have certain items that are must haves at the big feast and my family is no different. My mom asks me every year to make her favorite pie, Shoofly.  This treat is a fluffy molasses pie considered traditional among the Pennsylvania Dutch.  I made it last night and thought I would share.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Shoofly Pie

1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 cup light or dark brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2/3 cup hot water
2/3 cup dark molasses
1 unbaked 9" pie shell

Preheat oven 350 degrees

Combine flour, brown sugar, butter and salt, rub mixture to form crumbs.  Dissolve the baking soda in water and combine with molasses.
Pour molasses into pie shell, sprinkle in crumbs.
Bake 30-40 minutes or until filing is set.
